This is a fossilised ammonite. This is a spiecies of squid shell creature that underwent a very special form of fossilisation of extreme heat and pressure that formed the outside of the ammonite into a opal like gem fossil.

These creatures lived in the seas between 240 - 65 milion years ago, when they became extinct along with the dinosaurs. Found only in one place in the world, located in Alberta Canada.
